VG Love Tales | A moment of courage (Ellie + Martin)
These are your stories….
The real people that wear Violet Gray, in your own words, about your special love.
And also, the rings that you now own and cherish and hopefully one day far into the future, will continue to live on the hands of many generations to come.
November 19th, 2019 and enquiry form lands in the Violet Gray inbox from Martin.
After a reply or two, his email reads:
“As for when, I read it takes about 4 weeks, I am heading to the UK and will be there all December. I would love to give her the ring while we are away (stupid me left it too late). Not sure if you could send to my families house in London if it is done in time, while we are there (I know it’s probably not likely).”
My response: “Let’s do our best to make this happen for you both!”
And we did. Just a couple of weeks later *she, being their finished, beautiful Bespoke ring was ready to fly and for Ellie’s hand.
This is the love story of Ellie and Martin from Port Maquarie, Australia.
Your story, lets start here… how did you meet Martin?
We met at university in Armidale.
We were both studying the same unit online but had to go up to the campus for the practical lab work in the unit. We actually both thought each other were cute as soon as we saw each other for the first time in the lecture theatre! We got split up into the same practical group but I ended up having to be someone else’s lab partner.
It was the next day in the morning tea break when I saw Marty talking to my lab partner. Now I am an incredibly shy person usually, but this just goes to show what one moment of courage can do! I just went and sat close to them and eventually I joined in the conversation. Marty and I kept talking and hanging out, got lunch, sat in the lecture theatre together, then realised how close we actually lived to each other (only 1 hour apart). I said we should have a study date and Marty agreed and then we parted ways without exchanging numbers or anything!
I was like oh ok… well obviously not too interested… once again I was too awkward and shy to ask him for his number.
That night he found me on Facebook, messaged me, apologising for not getting my number and then we got dinner together that night!
We ended up having about 4 study dates back in our home towns before we started dating, that was nearly 5 years ago and have been inseparable ever since!
Which ring did you receive?
Tell us, how did your Bespoke ring come to you?
She had a long overseas flight!! She was very brave and boarded a plane to travel all the way from Australia to London to meet us while we were travelling. Then she arrived in London while we were exploring Scotland, so she had to wait patiently for us at Marty’s brother’s house.
So, when we returned, Marty decided to take her on one of our day trips out into the city. We left the house incredibly early to make it to Bushy Park by the time their ParkRun started. Long day of sightseeing, all while she was hiding in the backpack, which I was holding while Martin did his run!
One of the main things I wanted to do was go ice skating and they had a rink set up out the front of this beautiful old building in Greenwich. We got there and no way we were going in there, the ice skating rink was absolutely packed full to the brink with people. Instead, we decided to go into this beautiful building which we didn’t even know what it was, we were really just looking for toilets at this point. But we wandered around and found out it was the Queen’s old House! Marty asked me if I would like to dance in this grand ballroom in the middle of the building and we will get the guard to film us… well I wanted to but there are way too many people around and I am too shy unfortunately… so we kept wandering, we found a small room at the back of the building that was empty, I set up my phone to film us, and then we started dancing, with no one around but us.
I think we awkwardly danced for about 10 seconds before Marty spun me around and by the time I turned back around to face him he was down on one knee.
Now what you must know is that Marty is a big joker, so I am here saying “get up this isn’t funny you’ve taken the ‘we aren’t engaged yet’ joke too far”. With tears in his eyes, he pulls out this stunning little, wooden box from his pocket.
I still didn’t believe it until I saw her, my beautiful ring sitting inside.
Did you know that *she had been organised for you?
So I had been showing Marty different rings for a while, hence the not engaged yet joke that he created… but my beautiful friend Luna, (who also has a Violet Gray engagement ring), shared with me where her’s was from as she had enlightened me about the ethical side to wedding rings regarding diamonds and where and how they were sourced.
It was a no brainer that I had to get one from Violet Gray now because the transparency of the stone and business is so important to me!
Martin and I looked at them all together and we discussed what we thought was nice… so he knew exactly what I wanted. So yes, I knew he had the final decision on which ring I liked BUT I did not think that he was going to organise it so quickly!
I thought maybe after we get home from the UK he will organise it eventually… but he went above and beyond!!
When you look down at your hand and see your ring, what does she symbolise to you?
A life full of laughter, a journey of understanding and kindness, strength and growth.
A life full of love.
We knew we were going to be together forever but… when I see her on my hand, she gives me that instant reminder, and never fails to make me smile.
She represents quality and honouring this earth. Always endeavouring to learn better and then do better.
