What is Flat-Back Jewellery?

Flat-back jewellery is a style of stud designed with everyday comfort in mind.

Instead of a traditional butterfly backing, it features a smooth, flat disc that sits flush against the back of your ear or piercing. No sharp edges stabbing you in the neck, no catching on clothing or hair ~ just a gentle, secure fit you can forget you’re even wearing.

Crafted in solid gold, these pieces are made for continuous wear. They’re the quiet achievers of your jewellery collection: lightweight, low-profile and beautifully functional, while still holding the refined details you expect from Violet Gray.

Literally, SET & FORGET (and enjoy!)

. . . .

When choosing the post length for flat-back earrings (also known as labret studs) for ear piercings, it's important to consider which part of the ear the piercing is in, whether it's a new or healed piercing, and your anatomy

Below is a breakdown for typical ear piercings (healed) and recommended post lengths

Piercing Location

Common Flat Back-Post Length

Earlobe

6mm – 7mm

Helix / Forward Helix

5mm – 7mm

Tragus

5mm – 6.5mm

Conch

5mm - 6.5mm

Rook

5mm – 6.5mm

** Healed piercings usually do well with snug posts (6mm–7mm for most people).

For Fresh Piercings (Initial Jewellery)

New piercings need space to swell and settle and a little extra length goes a long way.

Our recommendation is that our Flat-Back pieces are suitable once the piercing has healed, the swelling has gone down and your skin is stable.

Tips for Choosing the Right Length

  1. Too short → Can cause irritation, pressure, or embedding

  2. Too long → Can snag easily or move too much (especially during healing)

  3. When in doubt → Ask your piercer for advice. A professional will gauge swelling and anatomy before selecting the appropriate length to ensure the most comfortable and secure fit.

How to Measure Your Ideal Post Length

If you’re transitioning into Flat-Backs and already wear earrings :

Measure the length of your current post using a caliper or ruler (from the point it sits against the skin, to the start of the decorative top).

Flat backs are measured from the flat disc (on the back) to the end of the post (not including the front decorative part).

For the most comfortable wear, if possible always choose internally threaded or threadless pieces — safer for the skin and beautifully smooth to insert.
