Name: Emerald

Origin of the Name: The world ‘emerald‘ stems from the Vulgar Latin (ancient Roman) words ‘esmaralda‘ or ‘esmaraldus’ which are derived from the ancient Greek word ‘smaragdos‘ meaning ‘green gem‘. In ancient times the name ’emerald’ was used for a variety of green gems.

Interesting fact: Ancient Romans viewed the Emerald as a symbol of fertility and that of the Goddess of Venus.

Found: Was first discovered and mined in Egypt, possibly as early as 1300 B.C. The finest emeralds have been mined in Columbia, but high quality Emeralds have also been found in Brazil, Russia, and Africa.

Core Message: Love, Compassion, Healing, Abundance.

Colour: Typically found in deep beautiful shades of green but can also be seen in yellow-green and blue-green. It’s important to note that Emeralds are considered to come in dark shades of green, the lighter shaded gems are categorized under the species name green beryl.

Birthstone: Emerald is the birthstone for the month of May and for those born in Taurus // 19th of April – 20th of May

Spiritual Benefits: Emerald is strongly associated with the Heart (Anahata) Chakra and helps to embrace unconditional love and compassion for one’s self and with family, friends, and the world at large. Like water, I allow all to wash over me and I maintain my unconditional love.

Emerald is also considered to be a stone of prosperity and can help stimulate wealth and abundance.

Emotional Benefits: This precious stone helps open one’s heart and heal emotional hurts. Emerald can help overcome feelings of unworthiness and abandonment while also encouraging acceptance of oneself and of others.

Physical Benefits: A stone of the heart, Emerald can assist in the healing of the heart from various imbalances or diseases.
